A common type of roofing is asphalt shingles which can be made in a variety of ways. Every roofing shingle company has a formula that they use in order to make their product different from their competitors. We are here to give you a basic understanding of how these asphalt roof shingles are made so that you can better understand the different types.

How are Asphalt Shingles Created?

This type of roofing shingle is created using a “sandwiching” technique. There are several parts that come together so we are going to discuss these parts and how they are created and why they are important

Asphalt Shingles: Membrane

The process of manufacturing an asphalt shingle starts with a sheet of fiberglass membrane. This membrane usually arrives as a large roll that is then cut down. Some shingles end up using a membrane that is made from organic fibers including wood chips, paper, and cardboard. This type of membrane also comes on a large roll. No matter what this membrane is created with, it helps create a strong, flexible base for the shingle. The membrane helps add increased fire resistance, weather protection, and a longer lifespan to your roof shingles.

Asphalt Shingles: The Asphalt Layer

During the next part of the shingle production process, the large sheets of membrane are then covered with hot asphalt. Asphalt is a thick, sticky, black semi-solid form of petroleum. The asphalt is added to the shingles in a precise process which increases its durability and weather resistance.  There can be additional ingredients added to the asphalt that will help increase the shingle’s fire resistance.

Asphalt Shingles: Granules

While the material is still warm, granules are pressed into it. These granules are typically crushed stones or tiny pebbles. They come in a variety of colors, and some are formulated to resist algae growth and to reflect the sun’s heat.

Another Layer is added to the shingle to keep the surface from sticking together during the process of packaging.

Packaging Process

Once the shingles have been manufactured, these sheets are then cut into a single shingle which measures around 12 by 36 inches. The shingles are then packaged into a bundle. Each manufacturer will know how many bundles you will need based on your square footage. Asphalt shingles can come in a wide array of textures, profiles, patterns, and colors.
